Jack Firebrace

Firebrace seems to be different to Stephen, Jack is working class unlike Stephen and represents the average british soldier. He is a miner and used to mine under German lines. Jack seems to be very unlucky as he faces the threat of death from the Germans and his officer- when he falls asleep on duty. It is Stephen who threatens him with court martial but he lets him off later. Jack's horrid time in the trenches and mining, struglling to breathe underground and rats on his face is contrasted against the officers dugout with the expensive silk on the wall and the music played as he leaves.
